How to Hang a Painting

Although it may seem easy, not everyone knows how to hang a picture properly. Don't worry! With these practical tips, you can turn your home into an art gallery.

A step-by-step guide to hanging a picture

1. What do I need to hang a picture?

Pencil, tape measure, hammer, hooks or wall fasteners (if the picture doesn't have any), wall plugs suited to the type of wall, nails, a spirit level and a drill. In other words, the essentials for your first DIY kit.

Experts stress the importance of having a good drill and, above all, quality drill bits, because otherwise the hole won't be drilled properly.

2. Decide where to hang the picture

In this regard, it's important to pay attention to the picture's dimensions, because if it's too large and the wall is small, it will look out of proportion. The same applies to a small picture on a large wall. In this case, it's best to create a composition with different frames, whether they contain paintings or photographs.

3. The ideal height

This should be measured from the viewer's perspective, so a height of 1.70 or 1.75 cm will be appropriate. If it's hung higher, the lighting won't be optimal, while if it's placed lower, it may be too close to the furniture or sofa.

4. Attach the hooks

If the picture doesn't have any, the first thing to do is attach a pair of hooks or wall fasteners to the side rails of the frame, not to the frame or the top rail, as they could come loose under the weight. Mark where they will be attached with a pencil and use a tape measure to ensure both are the same distance from the edge. Then drill with a very fine bit - or use an awl - and screw in the hooks.

5. Mark on the wall where the nails will go

When deciding on the two points where the wall will be drilled, some people use a tape measure, measuring the position of both points from the floor and the distance between them, then marking them with a pencil; others position the picture where they want it and give it a light tap at the corner where one of the hooks is. Using the mark left by the hook on the wall as a guide, drill, insert the wall plug and nail, and hang the picture partially. Then lift the other end of the picture and straighten it with a spirit level. Once it is level, simply give another light tap where the second hook is and drill again.

6. How to drill

It is essential to choose the right drill bit for the type of wall. Widia bits are suitable for brick walls, while metal bits are suitable for plasterboard. Likewise, the dimensions of the drill bit, wall plug, and socket should match.

Once these preliminary questions have been resolved, it is advisable to use a slightly smaller drill bit for the first hole, as this will make the second hole with the correct bit much easier. Always hold the drill bit at a 90-degree angle to the wall and apply firm pressure. It is helpful to use a drill equipped with a depth stop and a side handle.

7. The final L step

Once the holes have been drilled, we insert the wall plugs using a plastic mallet or the hammer itself, and screw in the wall anchors. Finally, we place the sockets in the clamp and can start enjoying the new decor in your room!

How to hang pictures without drilling holes?

If you don't have a drill at home or your landlord won't let you drill holes in the walls, you'll be glad to know that there are now alternatives that offer very good results, such as hanging a picture with easy hang, using hooks and adhesive strips, or using shelves or rails.

How to hang pictures of different sizes?

To hang large or very heavy pictures, you will need to increase the number of sockets you put in the frame. This way, the weight of the canvas and frame will be distributed more evenly, helping you avoid any mishaps.
